About the Performance

Premiered: I.S. 131M & Queens College, New York

Between Heaven and Earth is a collaboration with Orchestra of St. Luke’s, America’s foremost chamber orchestra. This suite of dances is inspired by the evocative scores of award-winning Chinese composers Chen Yi (writer of Ballad, Dance and Fantasy for Yo-Yo Ma and finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in Music) and Zhou Long (recipient of a Grammy Award for his Words of the Sun and an Academy Award in Music for lifetime achievement). Like the many pieces of music, each dance is a unique and distinct choreographic creation. When strung together, the sections have the power to create a dream-like scenario of watching cloud formations change from warriors, to celestial beings, to images of nature. Between Heaven and Earth explores the relationship between Chinese culture and the natural world, with Chen continuing on his exploratory and inventive choreographic journey.
